Natural Fibres: What’s the Difference Between Cotton, Linen and Rayon Fabrics?

Ever tried on two dresses made from natural fabrics and wondered why they look and feel different on your body? Even though they're the same size?
The cut of the dress plays a part, of course, but so does the type of fabric. One fabric might hold its shape and sit away from your body, while another fabric falls softly and closer to your body, moving with you.
Natural Fibres: Cotton, Linen & Rayon Fabrics
Understanding what types of natural fibres you love to wear makes a huge difference for finding dresses in cotton, linen and rayon fabrics you love, and shopping becomes a whole lot easier. It also helps explain why you love wearing certain pieces of clothing, and why others look pretty in the wardrobe only.
Cotton, linen and rayon are three natural fabrics we love reaching for at Rayanna.
Here’s what makes each of these natural fibres a favourite for our customers, with a few practical tips for keeping them looking good over time too.
Cotton Fabric: Familiar, Comfortable and Surprisingly Versatile
When you think about cotton, you’re probably picturing your favourite soft and stretchy t-shirt. But cotton can also be crisp and structured, softly textured or knitted into a light summer layer.
Cotton is a natural fibre grown on the cotton plant, and loved for its breathability and comfortable feel against the skin.
The important thing to remember? Not all cotton feels the same. A crisp cotton shirt behaves very differently from a stretchy cotton tee, even when both labels say 100% cotton.
Why we love wearing cotton dresses and clothing:
- Comfortable against the skin
- Breathable and absorbent
- Versatile enough for everyday basics and dressier pieces
Wardrobe Wisdom - Caring For Cotton
Cotton may be an everyday fabric, but that doesn’t make it indestructible. Repeated hot washing and tumble drying can shrink cotton clothing and wear them out sooner.
For machine washable cotton pieces, a cool wash and air drying are usually a gentler starting point to keep your pieces lasting longer. Reshape tees before drying, and dry cotton knitwear flat so the weight of the water doesn’t stretch it out.
Treating Dull & Yellowing Cotton Clothing
If your white cotton is looking dull or yellowing around the collar, adding more detergent isn’t necessarily the answer. This can overload the machine and may leave detergent on fabrics, contributing to that tired appearance.
To keep your white cotton clothing bright, try sun-drying with the dull or yellow areas directly exposed for a natural approach to brightening these areas.
You can also add ½ a cup of baking soda directly to your washing machine cycle with your detergent for a daily brightening boost.
Most of us have whitening and brightening laundry products at home that are perfect for tackling yellowing or dull cotton clothing.
Laundry products with an oxygen bleach base (mainly sodium percarbonate) such as Coles’ Ultra Oxy-Action or Vanish NapiSan can be used - always read the directions for washing or soaking, and spot test on your quality clothing first!
Linen Fabric: Yes, It Wrinkles. Yes, We Love It Anyway
Linen is made from the flax plant and has a sturdier texture than cotton. Linen clothing has coastal vibes, a breathable weave, and relaxed appearance, making it a favourite for Sunshine Coast dressing.
Some linen feels very crisp and structured, with thicker fibres. Other linen can be soft, floaty and fluid from the first wear. Both can be beautiful, depending on the garment and how you like your clothes to sit.
And linen creases? They come with the territory of wearing natural woven fibres.
You do not have to iron linen into submission. If you enjoy a relaxed finish, smooth it into shape while damp and let the texture be part of the outfit. Personally, we love that softer, lived-in look.
Why we love wearing linen clothing:
- Airy and comfortable in warm weather
- Beautiful natural texture
- Durable and often softer with more wear and washing
What about Italian and Chinese Linen?
At Rayanna, you’ll see linen garments made in both Italy and China. Country of manufacture alone doesn’t tell you how a piece will feel or wear.
The fibres, yarn, weave, fabric weight and finishing all play a part. So rather than choosing by country alone, feel the fabric and try it on. If you're ordering online, we have detailed product descriptions and a 'contact us' option so you can enquire with a real person in our shop about our new linen range in-store.
Wardrobe Wisdom - A Little Linen Tip
If you prefer a smoother finish, linen is generally easier to press while slightly damp. Trying to iron deep creases out of completely dry linen creates unnecessary work. You can even use a water mister to slightly dampen your linen clothing just before ironing.
For washable pieces, give them room in the machine and avoid leaving them bundled up after the cycle has finished. Shake out your linen dresses, tops, and bottoms, reshape and smooth the seams before drying. A little attention then can save a lot of ironing later.
Rayon and Viscose Fabrics: The Lovely, Floaty Fibres
That dress that swishes when you walk? Those relaxed pants that fall beautifully without feeling stiff?
There’s a good chance rayon or viscose is involved.
Rayon starts with plant cellulose, commonly from wood pulp, which is processed into a textile fibre. So, while it has plant origins, it isn’t a natural fibre in the same way as cotton or linen since it needs much more processing to become a fibre.
Viscose is also a type of rayon. In clothing descriptions, you’ll often see the two names used for very similar smooth fabrics. One isn’t automatically stronger, cooler or less prone to creasing than the other.
What we love about rayon and viscose fabrics is the drape. These fabrics often fall softly over the body, bringing movement to rayon dresses, viscose skirts and wide-leg pants.
Why we love wearing rayon and viscose dresses and clothing:
- Soft and smooth against the skin
- Lovely drape and movement
- Often light and comfortable for warm-weather dressing
Wardrobe Wisdom For Rayon & Viscose Fabrics
Rayon and viscose outfits deserve gentler handling, particularly when they’re wet. Some garments are washable, while others need dry cleaning because of their delicate construction or finish.
For pieces suitable for washing, use cold water and avoid rubbing, wringing or twisting. Gently press out excess water in a towel, then reshape and dry as directed. Keep them out of the tumble dryer unless the garment specifically allows it. This is because heat and agitation can cause shrinkage or change the fit of the piece.
Rayon and viscose dresses and clothes are lovely holiday pieces, too, provided you’re happy to give them a little care.
Soft and floaty doesn’t automatically mean crease-free or ready for the hotel dryer, but you can ‘steam’ your outfits if you hang them near the shower while you have a hot wash with the bathroom doors closed - you’ll find less wrinkles in your natural fibre outfits with a shake afterwards.
Which Natural Fabric Outfit Should You Choose?
Start with how you want your dress or clothing to feel and sit on you.
- Cotton for comfortable everyday dressing, from soft tees to crisp shirts
- Linen for natural texture and a relaxed finish
- Rayon, viscose or blended together for softness, drape and movement
- Linen and rayon blends for texture with a more fluid feel
Then look beyond the fibre name. Fabric weight, weave, lining and fit all affect how comfortable a garment will be.
If something feels too clingy, too stiff or too sheer, it may be the particular fabric rather than the style itself.
